THE JUICE PLAYLIST: OCTOBER

24 OCTOBER 2012

What does JUICE taste like? This month's juicy delivery includes Modeselektor, The Magician and Kuedo as well as remixes of Eight and a Half and Lana Del Rey by TOKiMONSTA and Jamie Woon respectively.

Eight and a Half – “Scissors (TOKiMONSTA Remix)”

Scissors (TOKiMONSTA Remix) by Eight and a Half

What’s the buzz: What happens when you add bits of Broken Social Scene to parts of The Stills? You get a whole new superband called Eight and a Half, of course! The electropop outfit recently announced their arrival with new single, “Scissors”, and best of all, it comes blessed with a lovely TOKiMONSTA remix. Double bonus!

Sounds like:  The original was already a gorgeous piece of ethereal synth splendor but “Scissors” is made all the more magical with TOKiMONSTA’s sweet touches of sleek percussion and bassy brilliance.

Prediction: It’s clear that Eight and a Half is swinging right out of the gate and tapping Brainfeeder’s first lady to spruce up first impressions is definitely the right way to go.

Lana Del Rey – “Video Games (Jamie Woon Remix)”

Lana Del Rey - Video Games - Jamie Woon Remix by woon

What’s the buzz: We’d prefer to stay out of the Lana Del Rey controversy that’s hilariously got indiedom split into bickering factions. So we’d just like to say, manufactured or not, “Video Games” is a hell of a song, which explains why it’s been remixed (and covered) to death. And Jamie Woon’s take is by far the best of the batch.

Sounds like: The post-dub figurehead lends his moody melody and pitch-shifting pessimism to Lana Del Rey’s breakout track, perfectly accentuating her voice with eerie awesomeness.

Prediction: This is a magnificent take. But we’re guessing that with or without this track, the two buzziest names in 2011 music will probably get on just fine.

Modeselektor feat. Thom Yorke – “Shipwreck”

Modeselektor - Shipwreck (Ft. Thom Yorke) by KatK

What’s the buzz: German glitch-electro duo Modeselektor have a great new album called Monkeytown out and two of the record’s finest cuts feature none other than Radiohead’s frontman (and part-time low-end DJ) Thom Yorke.

Sounds like: “Shipwreck” is our favourite of the two collabs (though both are excellent) and it’s an experimental wonder that fashions Krautrock, IDM and Yorke’s falsetto into swagged-out bliss.

Prediction: Modeselektor certainly deserves more notice and that’s something that always comes when Thom lends his name to a project.

The Magician feat. Jeppe – “I Don't Know What To Do”

The Magician Feat. Jeppe "I Don't Know What To Do" (Original) by TheMagician

What’s the buzz: Stephen Fasano is one-half of cosmic-house pair Aeroplane, but he’s recently begun a solo adventure under the moniker of The Magician. This is his long-awaited Kitsuné-backed first single featuring Dane Jeppe Laursen.

Sounds like: Take a little deep-house influence and some infectious power piano chords and you get a disco pop ditty at its catchiest.

Prediction: You’ll be raping the repeat button before we can say “abracadabra”.

Kuedo – “Ant City”

Ant City by Planet Mu Records

What’s the buzz: As one half of Vex’d, Jamie Teasdale is one of the key players in the rise of dubstep in the early noughties. But that was a different time and Jamie’s head was in a different place. Now as Kuedo, he’s discovering whole new electronica wilderness.

Sounds like: Don’t expect any malevolent grime here. It's vintage synth with sci-fi aesthetics (think Vangelis’ Blade Runner score) that’s as pretty as it is post-apocalyptic.

Prediction: This track is taken off his forthcoming Severant album which sees him bridging Lex Luger-esque hip-hop and experimental techno. It’s so intriguing that it should inspire a whole new world of production possibility.
