ARTIST INTERVIEW: SHIGEKI

11 JULY 2013

From Japan to Sydney and Singapore, Shigeki has been in the circuit since 1999, carving his unique sound between deep, soulful, progressive, tech house, nu-disco and chillout. Now part of a dynamic duo dishing out the business every Friday with Brendon P, Shigeki will be showcasing his Samurai skills at kyo for the Midnight Shift Label Showcase featuring Terrence Parker.

Hometown:
Nagoya, Japan

Astrological sign: Cancer

What would be your claim to fame?

I have deejayed in all kinds of places - bar, club, gym, church, theatre, hotel, shopping mall, park, beach, boat, cruise ship, warehouse, etc.

What would you say your style as a DJ is?

Versatile and unique between deep, soulful, tech and progressive house, nu disco, classic disco and chillout. I'm big on music with melodies and  because I used to play the violin when I was a kid and it makes me happy when I hear beautiful chords or harmony.

How did you get into DJing?

I bought my first decks back in 1998 before I left Japan and learned how to deejay by experimenting and making errors. Once I gained some confidence, I recorded my sets and shared them with my friends. My first gig came from someone who heard one of these mixes by chance and it was in a gym. Back then I didn't have a fancy flight case to carry my decks so I stacked them in a suitcase and wheeled it carefully every time.

Last song I downloaded:

Kraak & Smaak - The Future Is Yours (Adriatique Illusion Rework) [Jalapeno Records]

Favourite home-cooked meal?

Sukiyaki and shabu shabu. I like it when the whole family sits around a big pot and enjoy the food together. They remind me of the good times in my childhood even though I often used to fight with my sister when she tried to steal my food.

What's your current obsessions?

Prawn Mee from the shop on the corner of Neil Road and Duxton Road. The standard prawn mee soup with the yellow noodles is yummy but I love the one with the white noodles and in the thick white soup. On one occasion I had two servings back to back. It's that good!

Describe Brendon P:

Brendon is an incredibly talented deck master with a heart as big as Diana Ross. I'm very fortunate to work with someone whose knowledge of music and deejay skills are inimitable yet who is so humble and supportive. He also has the passion and drive to find and push the latest sounds that's coming out, which I find is very inspiring because there's tons of music coming out every day - both good and bad - and it's not easy to stay hungry all the time. It's been a real pleasure playing back to back with him and building our regular Friday night together at Kyo, and I have a feeling we will be having a lot more fun together.

What is one common misconception about you?

Shigeki is my real name. I have had people calling me all sorts of names and even mis-spelling it on event ads, pay cheques etc. Here are some examples: Shitake, Shideki, Shegaykey.. (the list goes on.)

Some of your favourite DJs?

Aeroplane, Joey Negro, Peter Rauhofer. I was very sad when Peter passed away earlier this year because he was one of the DJs/producers I have always admired because of his amazing remixes and dj skills. He influenced a lot of DJs and producers around the world and his legacy and music will live on for generations to come.

Favourite labels?

Get Physical, Kitsune, Toolroom.

Digital or Vinyl?

Digital since 2005.

Crowd teaser or crowd pleaser?

It depends on the type of gig I'm doing. I can be a crowd teaser when I'm playing a set in a club as I try to move between a few different styles to keep the set interesting and unpredictable. On the other hand, I would go all the way to please the crowd if it was like a wedding or someone's birthday party.

5 secret weapons?

I'm a samurai and don't share my secrets. Lol

If you could change one thing about the industry…

Less EDM sound and more music with good melody and soul.

What can we look forward to for your Midnight Shift performance?

Between Terrence Parker, Avneesh, Brendon and myself you can expect to hear the whole spectrum of house music and we will keep you dancing and smiling until very late.
