From Manchester to Singapore, Lucas Burrows has been the visual backbone for performing artists such as Kyle Hall, Jamie Woon, Kode 9, Ikonika, Robag Wurhme, Superpitcher, Octave One...just to name a few. Here, Burrows shares his top 5 music videos and more and hopefully there will be no strobe light pumping needed for this talent to get noticed. How did you fall into what you're doing?
I can't DJ and I'm too skinny to become a footballer, so I got into computers and then tried to do something interesting with that. Then one day I found myself working around the events scene thanks too a few friends and a lot of nights out.

What is the hardest bit about your work?
Finding the time...It's a lot of late hours and long nights, learning or attempting new things, trying to come up with something that is recognisable or unique. But also staying sober during an event, after all the hard work once it's all up I have a tendency to over celebrate.

And the best parts?
The actual event. It's an interesting industry where your work only appears in public on the night itself usually, this can lead to a lot of stress as it's not always tried and tested stuff, which at the end of the day is half the fun I think...but the bigger the venue the more of a buzz it is too see your work on display.

Point us to some visual influences you admire?
In this industry I would have to say Brandon Tay, I used to see a lot of his stuff around Singapore and was one of the things that got me into visuals, but my style is a bit different my influences would be more low-fi, I like simplicity, so Saul Bass or Josef Müller-Brockmann.

Visually it's a very clean, the colours and patterns are simple but the animation technique makes it stand out.

A Ha - Take on Me
This is a pretty old video, but for the time it was fresh. I still remember today which must make it a classic, i was only 3 or 4 when it came out...

Bjork  - All is Full of love
The art direction in this video is fantastic, it's super clean and cold, but subject matter and the audio come together with a lot of emotion.

N.A.S.A. - A Volta
This is a pretty crazy music video, but would be a dream project for any animator to work on, most of the N.A.S.A videos are.

Death Grips - Guillotine
Just because its epic.

And what about your favorite music?
To go out and party I have to say Drum and Bass, I'm from the UK, but generally I'm a bit of a Tricky fan.

How long have you been in Singapore; what would you like to see more of?
I've been in Singapore 7 years, in that time the music and nightlife scene here has changed a lot. If there is anything I would like to see more of, it would be people supporting their local DJs and clubs, and help develop the Singapore music scene by avoiding the venues that are around mainly built to sell table service.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I'm not too sure, this is the first time I thought about it in a while. Life in Singapore is pretty hi-tech so hopefully I won't be completely out of date.

How did you get to know Avneesh?
That’s a funny story...A long time ago I had a job as a lecturer in a university here in Singapore, I was 23 and a bit too young to be teaching which made it pretty interesting none the less. Av was studying visual communications, I didn't actually teach his classes, but he was one of the more outgoing students and we used to hang out for drinks after classes.

What can we expect from you vs. Avneesh at the Midnight Shift 3rd Year Anniversary?
Some healthy competition? I'm sure it will be appealing to watch - I think our styles are a bit different so I guess it will be interesting how we merge it all together on the night, but the key thing is not to over step the music. At Drum and Bass nights I have a tendency to get too drunk and start pumping strobe lights to get noticed. But I won't be doing that.
