You might have already heard his 2-hour promo mix that has been the talk of the town. Now read the mind behind it. Since moving from the UK, Ming has quickly risen the ranks as Zouk's latest resident. Known for his spontaneous and sophisticated 3-deck mixing, he's clearly one to watch. Ming will be representing his homeground at Midnight Shift x Zouk: In the Underground on Nov 5th.

When did you join Zouk as a resident and how did that come about?

I joined Zouk in August this year having been playing on a part time basis at the end of July. I guess I fitted the bill...young, good taste, good looking. Haha. But in all seriousness, there came an opportunity, I seized it, and ended up working at one of the best clubs in the world.

Prior to that you were a Home Club resident. How was that experience?

I'll be forever grateful to Home Club. During the switch they were supportive of my decision and we still have close ties. Playing there gave me the freedom to develop not only my skills as a DJ, but opened my eyes (or ears rather) to whole new worlds of music.

Was it tough transiting from an underground venue to a top international club?

I've always believed in music and I still do. Becoming acquainted with a different crowd has been tough at times, and there's definitely a lot more pressure, but playing at a top international club such as Zouk only means more exposure for the music which can only be a good thing.

Has your sound changed in any way?

I don't think so. My sound has always been influenced predominantly by bass; that element certainly comes through when I play. The difference is now I get to play everything I like. 

Can you describe some of the differences between the UK scene and Singapore?

In the UK, dance music is quite fairly represented in terms of artists, djs and clubs. You can find a night every night that will play what you want to hear. Here in Singapore certain genres are underrepresented and haven't had a chance to develop into a proper scene.

You are known for your 3-deck mixing. Why 3 decks and how has that help shape your sets?

There's certainly a bit more energy, and it allows you to sneak in songs that you otherwise wouldn't be able to play in a set. I've always found it important to differentiate myself from other DJs, as with present technology it looks like everyone wants to be one; playing 3 decks makes you rethink structure, rhythms, and how you can utilise different elements of different songs to create a symphony that you can uniquely call your own.

What goes on in your mind while mixing behind the decks?

A lot. I'm known to over think. Usually I'll be looking out for signs and reactions on the dance floor - that's probably the most important thing. I think a lot about the energy of the music, of peaks and troughs; how to build that journey, how to make a song sound better than it does alone. I treat my sets as a symphony, orchestrating separate tracks to achieve a coherent, and cohesive sound. Through visualising melodies, analysing structures and with a lot layering, the sum of the parts becomes greater than the whole and that's when you make what is someone else's, yours.

What makes a good (or bad) DJ?

A good DJ should be aware of the floor at all times, have a strong conviction in the music they play, whilst still possessing the ability to adapt in different situations. A good DJ finds a balance of what people want to hear, and what he wants them to hear. Most of all, a good DJ should find a way to make themselves unique, whether it be through technique, sound, or performance; a good DJ must differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack.

What advice would you give an up-and-coming DJ hoping to cut it in the scene?

Go out and meet people. It's not really good enough to just excel at what you do, but you have to build relationships with the right people to get noticed. You have to be hungry, but not gluttonous - don't annoy people. Make friends, and make it easy for them to listen to what you're doing.

Can you tell us about the mix you did for us?

No matter what genre of music I'm playing I always like to offer a lot of variety in terms of selection and this mix is a good example; an aural journey around the world from Chicago to Detroit, from London to Berlin. Made up of my favourite tracks, both old and new, the ultimate objective was to contextualize each song in one cohesive 2 hour take. Specifically selected based on it's structure and musicality, each track enhances its predecessor continually evolving throughout the duration of the mix. Coming from a drum and bass background, i like to play fast and mix fast, which achieves a fluidity and momentum to the recording. Basically a lot of effort and hours were put in to make it flow like it does.

Who are some of your musical heroes?

When I play I tend to sway to the DJ's DJ archetype. DJ Marky, Andy C, Friction, Jeff Mills, Samuel L Sessions are a few that come to mind...Musically I look to drum and bass for inspiration. People that have managed to balance the energy, soul, groove and atmosphere in their music. Probably LTJ Bukem, Goldie and Calibre.

You are also a producer...

When it comes to my own music, I'm very introvert. If something is not perfect, the only people who will be able to hear it are the guys that are around while I'm making it. I put a lot of thought and analysis into production but there are simply things I don't know how to do, and until I do, I will maintain radio silence.

What can we expect to hear from you on 5 Nov?

The unexpected. Haha. Can't give away trade secrets. A bit of London, a bit of Detroit and a lot of Berlin.
